Szikes Visitor Centre - Mórahalom
Interactive exhibition at Lake Nagyszéksós in Mórahalom
About the project
As part of a HUF 1.7 billion investment aimed at renewing Lake Nagyszéksós and its surroundings in Mórahalom, a stork shelter, a visitor centre, and related educational trails and observation towers have been built in the town.
Following preparatory work begun in 2022 with the Mórahalom Municipality and Kiskunság National Park, our company actively joined the design of the visitor centre’s exhibition space in autumn 2024, acting as project manager and contractor. The exhibition aims to present the unique natural features of the Lake Nagyszéksós area in a sustainable way, with a special focus on habitat protection.
In parallel with the construction work, the interior of the visitor centre was divided into themes, interior and graphic designs were prepared, the related interactive elements were developed, and games actively engaging younger visitors were worked out in detail.
A key goal was to offer visitors a close-to-nature experience in the exhibition space, conveying the tangible reality of the living world while combining it with the technological possibilities available to modern exhibitions. Accordingly, the strictly protected plant and animal species of the area’s habitats (sandy woodlands and grasslands, fen meadows, marshes, alkaline lakes and meadows) will appear in a 360-degree projection room, in animations, and built into an interactive drawing wall and games. The trilingual exhibition, in Hungarian, English and Serbian, also features a three-dimensional model evoking the traditional farmsteads of the Homokhátság region and a sound dome presenting natural soundscapes.
The surroundings of the visitor centre also offer plenty to discover:
- Educational trails: an internal educational trail accessible on foot has been built, and the existing trails have been complemented with observation towers. One of the towers will also be reachable by pontoon boat via the canal in the middle of the lake.
- Playground and herb garden: a playground has been created for children and a herb garden for nature lovers.
- Viewing enclosure: by renovating the shelter of the water buffalo herd, a spectacular enclosure has also been created, offering a special insight into the animals’ lives.
The visitor centre and the stork shelter open to the public on 4 August 2026.
